Woofing love. Celebrating past via design
A few days ago I visited the world’s largest dog show I have experienced in a long time. Within moments or sniffs should I say I knew I had returned home. With a massive grin I stepped back into my childhood, a place in time where all my future receptivity had formed. Woofing love.
I must have been 5 when the first cute ball of happiness stormed into my life. It was early 80’s and both of my parents had just graduated from Uni. They became full time parents and VETs.
For a long time I did not really understand what was it they actually did. I vaguely remember the smell of my father’s shirts after he’d come back from work. The organic metallic smell that lingered onto his body. I used to love the evenings when I would go with him to the biggest, coolest building child could imagine.
Mixing potions in a lab equipment, pumping air into empty syringes, sitting in front of a massive personal cinema observing microscope close-ups of living tissue created magic. It planted the organic seed of creation into my brain.
Not much has changed since then. I am still found creating with my tongue out, overcome with excitement. Eyes fixed in one direction, hands trying to chase all the images my brain delivers in fast and colourful motion. I love that moment after being contacted by a new client, when I start researching for the new project. Often it’s topics I never thought of before. I am back on the evening shift in my grown version of a childhood lab.
Until recently I did not know what people work at a letting agency, or how they work. Like a clueless child I asked lots of questions. I am sure some of them were really naive, but like a child I believe there are no wrong questions if they lead us to discovering something new. It took me long time to become proud of that constant hunger for knowledge. But in my own way, by touching subjects and people closely, to feel the temperature best suited for the design. I believe in following basic instincts that teach us more than any book can. The never-ending curiosity, brighter colours, sharper shapes and the warmth of living creatures give me the biggest kick. I always go back to my roots, where a dog licking my face is a sign of love, comfort and security; not unhygienic behaviour. Woofing love, celebrating past.
That must be the reason I am always happy to go back home and see how, even after 35 years, my parents still smile when they see little four-legged patients coming into their practice. They still treat them as they did then, with love.
It felt great and rewarding to design a new identity for their clinic. I felt happy I could give them a bit back for all that they offered me all those years.
They are all very different but the same energy and passion goes into the design process
From Vet Clinics to my design desk.
Different yet the same.
